Tornado

Sometimes we hear an alcoholic say
that the only thing he needs to do is to keep sober.
Certainly he must keep sober,
for there will be no home if he doesn't.
But he is yet a long way from making good
to the wife or parents whom for years
he has so shockingly treated.
Passing all understanding is the patience mothers
and wives have had with alcoholics.
Had this not been so,
many of us would have no homes today,
would perhaps be dead.

The alcoholic is like a tornado
roaring his way through the lives of others.
Hearts are broken.
Sweet relationships are dead.
Affections have been uprooted.
Selfish and inconsiderate habits
have kept the home in turmoil.
We feel a man is unthinking when he says
that sobriety is enough.
c. 2001 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 82 With permission, AA World Services, Inc.

Thought to Ponder....

Life didn't end when I got sober -- it started.

Just being dry is definitely NOT enough. I could not live in my OWN SKIN, drunk or dry. Take away the alcohol and side dishes and I had a truly pathetic negative mess left over, and the pain was ungodly.

I HAD to let something change me, being that I was powerless to change myself. I beat myself up a lot sometimes, criticizing the things that afflict my insides today... but I have GOT to take a look back and see that I have come oh, so far. Good things are happening within me and they happen best when I am letting go of trivial nonsense and not trying to be perfect.

I have come to find that doing things the way AA suggests is the easier softer way, for me and the people around me. "Failed Policies Don't Work"...... that is true for me in my life. if it doesn't work, I have got to stop doing it, and AA shows me how to let go and stop being a tornado, in sobriety.
