The one promise that has evaded me over the years has been the fear of economic security.
Raising two girls on my own, in a small Kansas town of 3000, has been tough.
One of the ongoing consequences of my alcoholism was the fact I walked away from a chance at a nursing degree, with an academic scholarship in place, because it interfered with my partying at the tender age of 18.
I've taken college classes here and there over the years when I could, most of them being offered through an outreach program here locally through a community college about 36 miles west.
The youngest is now almost 20, and so I made arrangements to take a campus tour of a community college that offers the associate of science degree in medical information technology.
Imagine my shock when I sat down to tentatively plan out my class schedule with the director of that degree program, only to find out I actually have enough credits from past classes to graduate with a double degree in the spring of 2009!
I didn't 'get it' the first time around and drank again after 4 years. By the grace of God I was able to crawl back to the rooms of AA and start over again.
I've stuck around 17 1/2 years this time, and that particular promise is finally coming true for me!
I am so grateful today for a loving God, AA, and the chance to finally get that degree.
By the way, I will turn 50 this May, and am amazed at the people I have already met through the college who did degrees later in life!
It's never too late to achieve your dreams
