I listen to ALL of what Every speaker has to say .
There may be something in what they're saying I need to apply to my life.

Hi Bill,
Welcome to the MIP board. Hope you were not in a meeting when you submitted this topic :).
I think it should be avoided if at all possible. I went to a meeting the other day where they mentioned " please do not use electonic devices or text during the meeting".

This is so true for me, too.
In meetings I often hear amazingly useful ESH, from wise oldtimers to newbies--and everybody in between.
At its most fundamental level, AA is one drunk talking to another. A corollary is that AA is a drunk(s) listening to another.
That's the way it has been since the beginning.

I don't think that you should be offened if someone is texting in a meeting you don't know why they are texting.. If they are always texting every meeting I can see that being a problem. It could be someone that just wants to make sure they are there giving them encouragement, or it could be something important or even business related that is important. Since you don't know the context of the text I don't think you should be offened.

I see a lot of this in the meetings I attend and am guilty of it myself from time to time. Usually, I put my phone away and keep it that way until the meeting is over. Few things can't wait until after a meeting ... and reality is we are at the meetings to share and to hear one another.
That said, my father-in-law has stage four cancer so I do sometimes check my messages during a meeting to make sure I don't suddenly need to be some where.

Quite simply, I'm an old fart and I do not text, ever ... well next to never, and then it's a 'yes' or a 'no' type text ... AND never during a meeting ... I think it appears rude and uncaring of others ...
Personally, I put my phone on 'vibrate', or silent, and if I were to get an 'emergency call, then I'd excuse myself from the meeting and take it out of 'ear shot' of the room ... I have been and am distracted when others text ... and I don't know this for a fact, but their are some I suspect are playing some 'freakin' games on these new fangled devices ... that or they're looking up stuff on the internet ... ... ... This speaks to me loud and clear "Okay, I'm here but I don't want to be ... or ... I have more important stuff than being in this meeting." ... ... ...
That's my opinion, and it oughtta be yours ... LOL
P.S. We have one group that leave the doors open during the meeting, for late-comers, and there have been some that have taken calls during a meeting and don't go far enough down the hall ... their conversation echos thru the halls, disrupting the meeting ... then someone has to get up and shut 3 different doors ... (a royal pain in the butt) ... I see this as a total lack of respect!

That may be the first actual MIP post from a meeting, pretty amazing if you think about it.

Not the case, Dean- I've done it:) I went through a period at around 8 or 9 months where I would text during meetings... Like throughout the entire meeting. As pappy pointed out, I thought I was way too cool to actually pay attention (I actually was paying attention but wouldn't dare show it)... And I also had lots of friends to text 'very important stuff' to- I have a full, fabulous life and I don't need YOU people. That was pretty much my mentality for that time. Kinda like 'see, I get it, I'm fine and have tons of people in my life... So leave me alone you crazy AA people'. A nice immature display of both fear and arrogance.

I wanted to get a nice sound system for my living room, but quality speakers are expensive. I tried to win some cash online, but I had a terrible streak and lost 60 dollars. I was so bummed out and ready to stick with my TV speakers. I found spinogambino and thought Id give it one last try. I bet big and hit a huge jackpot. The sound system is set up now and movies sound incredible. It was a risky move, but Im so happy I took the chance. It really upgraded my home entertainment setup.
