I am not a fan of his, not a soccer fan, but i have one thing in common with him i to am an alcoholic.
it helps me to see where it can lead a person.
some are remembering the soccer hero today others are saying why pay attenchion to an alchie and a waster.
in the end he was a human being as far as im concerned.

Heard about this yesterday on the radio...I too am saddened that alcoholism has taken another one. Not because I know much about english football( go Broncos!) but because I saw too clearly that this a cunning and baffling disease. How else do you explain continuing to drink after recieving a liver transplant and knowing that if you drink you will die? This is a disease. And I pray that George Best is no longer suffering, that he can be at peace.

I think George Best was given more chances to stop drinking than most people get. New liver, top quality medical treatment etc. He made his decision and now he's gone.
I had a friend who made the same decision, he drank his liver into oblivion at the ripe old age of 38, leaving behind a wife and 3 kids.
Some people have a genuine desire to stop drinking. We see these people at AA meetings.
Some people SAY they have the desire to stop. We see these people at funerals and in the obiutaries in the newspapers.
All about personal choice!

I disagree chris.... if one can simply "choose" not to drink, is he or she really an alcoholic? Seems like its a little more complex than that... Of course that is just my opinion...

i hope now our george is at peace i at times last year wanted to lift the phone to reply to radio interviews when george was getting a slating about drinking after his liver transplant i was going to ask if george had cancer and had a relapse of that disease would they being saying the nasty inhumane things they were cancer patients have the compasion and love of others with this disease of alcoholism it takes the love of your family and friends it takes and takes and then comes for your life -----soberity is a very precious gift for us who are blessed enough to have been guided to the aa way of life and can arrest this serious disease one day at a time i have seen a number of people die now due to alcoholism 3 young men last year who did attend aa in and out i often ask the question i wonder why so many dont get this gift i have no answer at times i think i do not have near enough gratitude for what i have been given--- not drinking ---no craving----climbing out of that black hole of hate and despair ------living a reasonably happy content life oh boy how lucky i have been people like george my heart goes out to may he rest in peace he came from 60 miles away from me una

George was wrong, Chapter 2 of the Big Book of AA is titled "There is a solution" "We of Alcoholics Anonymous know of thousands (millions now) of men and women who were once just as hopeless as Bill. Nearly all have recovered. They have solved the drink problem.
Only God knows why some get it and others don't.
We had a man in the fellowship where I live who following the breakup of his marriage went insane with just weeks short of 18 years, no human power could help him. He had Grandparents, parents, children. Grandchildren, an exwife and a sponsor and sponsees who all still loved him and tried to help him. In spite of all the positives in his life he ended up taking his own life and left only pain and broken relationships between his parents and exwife. Bob.

Hi, recovering jb.
I agree with you that one can not necissarily choose not to drink. But a person can choose to join AA and to follow the program. Physically a detox will help with the withdrawal, beyond that is the part where the program kicks in.
And on a final note, your opinion is as valid as anyone elses, we all have differing opinions, thats what makes conversations interesting!

Being the American and the woman I am, I really didn't know about George Best until I saw CNN the other night. I don't care if an Alcoholic dies sober or still drinking, it saddens my heart, we are all children of God.
The only remission for this disease is to not take a drink... he was just one of those who didn't get the program, but that doesn't mean he was a loser, I don't like the saying "Stick with the winners", if the winners turn their backs on the "loser" how is that carrying the AA message. I will let the light shine, for All to see.
Just my two cents. I had to take my friend who has liver disease to the ER the other night, she had to be transported to the city by ambulance, I am praying for her, she has not been drinking, but now all the meds she has to take are messing with her system...
God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

It's always sad and sickens me when we lose another. I lost a 42 yr old friend recently. My opinion, nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God's world by mistake - some are meant for recovery, others are not.........
