I have already decided to get a sewing machine. I have made up my mind that part of my obsession with drinking was keeping myself busy, only with something poisonous to my body and mind and spirit. I feel so much better already and have gone to a couple of amazing meetings. I start the real work on Thursday (3 hours) a night for two weeks. In the meantime, I need new activities and am looking for other suggestions. What do we do with our selves with all this time once spent drinking?

Sewing machine hu? Sounds good to me.:) Ile take 2 large blankets and 3 sweaters and 2 pairs of big woolen mittens for next winter.
Yup. Its a matter of filling in all that drinking time. I try to go out for walks each day. Some are short. Some are long. Kinda nice to smell the flowers for a change. You have a good day.

Hey Back, Sounds like a good plan. Hobbies... mine are gardening, reading, going for long drives in the country, trying to find those places I remember from my childhood.I spent maybe too much time on the net.But anything to keep you busy helps with the cravings.
I considered AA/Al-anon a hobby for awhile now it's life for me.I'm glad you are back.

Where do I send all these jeans that need patching?
Try everything! Some folks like to do one thing well, but I am one who does a bit of everything not always so well, and always have heaps of unfinished projects on the go... I guess the truth is I just like knowing there always IS something to do, so I give everything a whirl. Have learned a lot of new things in sobriety...have had to get help with a lot of them too, as I tend to jump in and then go "Ummm..." and start scratching my head. But I figure its all about learning...
Have fun with whatever you decide to try and if it interests you I say go for it.. have a dabble in it. The girls and I are also renovating a caravan, which is starting to take shape, the best part was swinging the sledgehammer...I love fiddling in the garden and seeing what grows...and we have a heap of critters, so they all need something...sometimes I paint (not all that well) and write poetry, and I tried learning guitar in sobriety (but I still only play if no-one is around lol..so then I can pretend I am Janis Joplin). I don't like cooking much, but I have learned I make pretty good jams and ANZAC cookies...and cheesecake.
It fun once we stop drinking, and realise we can now do just about anything you want to do, huh?

Anything that I used to do drunk...I can do sober. Bowling, fishing, dancing...instead of taking the beer along I take along people from AA. It didn't feel right at first but my sponsor said if I did it 10 times sober then it would feel normal...and ya know, she was right!
Sewing sounds like I great idea, I used to chop wood to get out of my head.
And if you're making cheescake,Nic, I'm going over there!!!
Love, cheri

Thank you all for your insights. I figure by the time I get my seamstress qualities down I will have lots of ideas for projects. I also love gardening. Still feel that 'something' is missing. Can't wait until I don't even miss the stuff anymore............................................

When I got sober I had a hard time getting back into painting which has always been great love of mine. I fretted over it for a while. Somewhere around a year sober I took up martial arts. Something requiring this amount of discipline and commitment wasn't anything I'd be up to doing when I was drinking. It's been a great experience. I've tried a lot of other things too... volunteer work, borough council, teaching ESL. It's amazing just thinking about all the things I've done since I put the booze away. How much of our lives we waste. Thanks for reminding me. Another one for my gratitude list !
