We Are Who We Think We Are

How we think about ourselves has an impact on what we do. If we decide that we are less of a person because we have an illness, then we may not fulfill our potential. If we decide our illness will consume our every thought and action for the rest of our lives, then it probably will. If we decide that we will always be a victim and our life will bring us nothing but misfortune, then our life may just turn out that way.

On the other hand, if we begin to believe positive things about ourselves, eventually our outlook on life will become positive as well. When we believe that we are lovable, that we can cope with our illness, and that we are no less of a person because of it, then this is what shall be. We can change who we are by changing who we believe ourselves to be.

Today, do I remind myself of my abilities, my choices, and my opportunities?

Thought for the Day

My attitude and perspective can make life more positive and joyful.

Thanks Pappy. Really enjoy reading your posts, always food for thought. Physically can not make a meeting today so I thought I'd see what was going on here. I have been blessed with many abilities namely helping the critically ill and injured, which is what I am doing tonight. As long as I make the choice to constructively address my issues with alcohol I can continue to help my fellow man. I have always taken this responsibility seriously. As bad as my drinking got ,never came in impaired or drank in the morning when I got off ( too damn sleepy). Problem is I often have several days off in a row , which is trouble for a drinking alcoholic.

Saturday would have been 3 years sober, instead it is ten days sober. I am going to let that go after this week and get back to working the program , which right now is making meetings and looking for a sponsor. I can already feel positive things happening. I came in with a smile on my face tonight which generally is not the case after a three day binge. Luckily the group I go to is full of positive , caring folks and only a few miles from my home.

Good luck all,

T.

I have one suggestion Todd, ... grab the 'Sponsorship' pamphlet at one of your meet'ns and re-read it ... it has some great tips to keep in mind when look'n for a sponsor ...

Actually, I'm sure it's on the Web too ...

I sometimes think my recovery is me banging my head against a brick wall so I can distract myself from the pain of having a headache.  If there is not insurmountable problem in my life, I am sure to be able to create one.  Self forgiveness, accepting me for who I am and not passing judgement, convincing myself deep down I have something good and creative to give back to the world (to boldly go where no person has gone before) is the real challenge.  Reading stuff helps.

John.

A friend at a meeting once shared that when he gets disconnected with problems and self pity he just starts his day over again and starts feeling positive, grateful, accepting and living life on life's terms. Things will work out, they seem to always do even if the result isn't perfect. Kind of simple if I'm willing to try and try and try......
