Recovery in wedding vows

Hi all!

I am so lucky and blessed to be getting remarried and recovery has everything to do with it.  Addiction tore my marriage apart with a divorce in 2011 and recovery (4 years sober last week) has brought it back together.

I want to incorporate my commitment to recovery/sobriety in my marriage vows.  Does anyone have ideas on the words I might use or how I could write this?  Or...if you have any idea on references you could point me too that would be great.  I am having writers block and I am praying about it.

Thank you

Good to see you back here Mike ... missed you ... and Congrats on 4 years ...

Wedding Vows huh? ... I'll have to give some thought to this ... and maybe post something else then ... However, my sponsor told me to never 'swear off' the booze ... we simply take everything 'one day at a time' ... Today I can go without a drink ... so I do not make promises when it comes to drink'n ... especially long range plans ...

Is your proposed new spouse a 'recovering alcoholic' ? ... does he/she know of your past and that you have a commitment to the AA 'way of life'??? ... the more open your relationship is, the better ...

Hope this helps, I just don't have a good handle on this yet, LOL ...

Glad you're back, love ya and God Bless,
Pappy

Well, congratulations sir. I hope your day is just as inspiring as mine. These were the vows I said at my last wedding. You can take what you want and leave the rest or write your own version.  Again, congrats.

1) I see these vows not just as promises but as lifelong commitments. I'll laugh with you and cry with you. I'll care for you and share with you, I'll run with you and walk with you, and I will build my life around you, not in spite of you.

2) I promise to be faithful, respectful and to support you through thick and thin. I promise to live by the same standards we both share and not just my own.

3) I promise to be patient when love demands it; to speak softly with objectivity and open-mindedness, to be more selfless than selfish and speak only when spoken too.

4) I vow to let go of any harsh expectations, to inspire you and encourage you, and to live in complete harmony through good times and bad.

5) I promise to be loving, caring and eager to forgive. I promise to be trustworthy when honesty requires it, kind when love demands it, and obedient when others deserve it.

6) I vow to change when change demands it, to keep my intentions known when situations require it, and I vow to remain neutral, whether it's unified or not.

7) I promise to forgive and to be forgiven, to practice patience when tolerance demands it, and I promise to focus entirely on my shortcomings and not your own.

8) I vow to remain positive, to acknowledge the good  and not just the bad, I vow to accept things even when they seem different, and I vow to put your love above all else.

9) I vow to remain steadfast when annoyances trouble us, to not take things personally even when situations demand it, and to remain calm even when the waters defile it.

10) I vow to accept our differences including my own, to remain unified and forthcoming, and I promise to resolve any issue that seeks to divide us.

11) You are my light, my love, my lifelong companion; and I vow to comfort you in good times and bad, to honor and cherish you in words and deeds, to be your partner, your friend, your husband.

12) And, most importantly, I promise; that on this day I shall love you like no other, and I vow to be not just a husband, a friend, a lover, but also a counselor, a provider and lifelong companion. I promise to be your partner from this day further and forevermore to death do us part. That is my promise.
