I've been sober for a few years and now I'm drinking socially - under control but with a LOT of effort - especially during summer and holidays. I am involved in this show and find the stories SO VALUABLE.

Check it out. This video gets REALLY interesting after minute Hope it inspires and help continue the fight.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DViDrDzTpc

"Most of us have been unwilling to admit we were real alcoholics. No person likes to think he is bodily and mentally different from his fellows. Therefore, it is not surprising that our drinking careers have been characterized by countless vain attempts to prove we could drink like other people. The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of insanity or death.

We learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery. The delusion that we are like other people, or presently may be, has to be smashed.

We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control. All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such intervals - usually brief - were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization. We are convinced to a man that alcoholics of our type are in the grip of a progressive illness. Over any considerable period we get worse, never better."

From the AA Big Book, Chapter 3.

....and sorry.....I don't click on links on posting boards.

I will say that if it is one of those videos about controlled drinking, it will not help me. I tried enough of that nonsense on my own without anyone's help.

G'day Pina. In One month , I will be sober 29yrs. I Have been sober from my 1st meeting.

I hope this works for you . BUT , If it does not . Get Back to AA as Soon as you can.

I KNOW this or "other" cures , WON'T work for me.

Famous people . Extremely rich people . Movie stars . Singers . Politicians . Olympians  &

Elite Sports people . Ordinary folk & Other Truck Drivers have come back to the rooms of

AA & told me . Controlled drinking did NOT work for them . So , why could , would or should

it work for me .

I like to remember what my Neurologist told me 25yrs ago . After some tests .

"You know , if you had kept drinking after you had that chance to stop , you Would have

been Dead in three months".

"So what you are saying Doc . I gave it up , before it gave me up" . "Exactly".

He did not know I was going to AA.

PIna . ALL those above mentioned people  I Know personally . They have come back to AA

because No other way worked for them .

And Pina , if this works for you Great , enjoy . We WILL be here for you , if it does not.

How long have you been "drinking socially?" can you describe the effort you make to stay in control? Do you ever fail in your control efforts?

Welcome to this discussion forum, pina.

Aloha Pina and thanks for the reminder...I always drank sociably...which was my way of saying it.   Very very few others I drank with would describe it that way though. Zoomtopz and hopefulone  are two if the the fellowship I listen to cause I'm no longer interested in trying to drink without dying...Do you care?  Sounds like not.
