What I was attempting to do, was put out a topic for discussion, with out any rhetoric from myself, and see how that works out. The evidence shows that with out some type of initial stimulus, there is not any motivation to begin sharing. This is a WE program for sure.smile  Back to the topic of purpose....when that is used in a mtg, it is very interesting hearing different views, from different folks, at different stages of recovery as to what the purpose is of all this we do in AA, for them. I had a very limited view of this life when I began and believe that my view is and will be limited to my experiences and efforts made. Regardless of the time in, if I am attempting to enlarge my "New state of consciousness" as Bill describes it, my views & perceptions will continue to deepen and grow. How I view the world around me is very different from my humble beginnings, but it is helpful for me to have a barometer of sorts, to gauge and measure my place in line. Interesting for me is that I seem to remain in the middle...as from my point of view, I've come a long way with a long way to go. Hearing where I've been, and hearing where I can be helps to keep me right sized....I have a tendency to get grandiose. I need to stay right sized to be of any good to God, others and myself, which is what I see as my purpose today. God bless every one today and have a super sober day.

I like 5th Tradition - Each group has but one primary purpose - to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

I am trying to live on this and to be not only my group's purpose, but my own, too. It is interesting that the more I put my efforts to my recovery, the more my life has purpose at all. Still trying to look for the alcoholic who still suffers ... that's all about - to be useful to God and others. And only this matters. My life without A.A. doesn't have purpose. It is trash. With A.A. everything make sense and I have the most humanely purpose of all, the most kindly purpose. It is amazing that I am on the road. I am so grateful.

Or, as worded in our AA Preamble, "Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety".

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

I guess that has to be it....That's what they tell us at the beginning of every meeting. For myself....It's very different even having a purpose in life....I like it...For a change. I guess one of the promises that comes along with that would be...

That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.

I think that is the only feeling I had when I came into AA.

As mentioned, our primary purpose is self survival and then help others to survive. For many it is that simple.

Others also use, or hide behind, this purpose for another. Sometimes these others become their primary purpose.
These others include 'to save a marriage/relationship, save a job, con the court system, guru status, and to find a partner.
I even came across one fellow that befriended others to find a pasty to con money out of - and then disappear.

Some develop from the quoted primary purpose (Step 12) to include God consciousness as their primary purpose (Step 11). (I tend to come from this viewpoint).

Good topic...Might be good to suggest it for my home group...give it a purpose.  I propose to do that and see how it comes out.  My purpose is to have a manageable life and to be of use to whomever my HP puts before me and tells me to help...alcoholic and not.  There are lots of people around me with need who are not alcoholic...hungry, homeless, jobless, unloved etc...  One of my 12steps doesn't mention alcoholics...just replaces that word with "others" .  Opens up the task doesn't it...cannot drink and get that task taken care.  I proposed not to drink today and haven't yet.  ready for bed.   smile

"Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety".  To play the role God assigns me today.

Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us.
