I love fantasy literature and the Tolkien books.  It did occur to me when watching the movies/reading them again in sobriety that the Gollum/Sméagol character is completely that of an end stage alcoholic/addict.  I actually found a link that says the same thing:

It's one of those things where you feel uncomfortable and know you are seeing something that resembled you in your sickness. That's what tripped this off. It's motivation too to think that pretty much, that is what alcohol turns me into. Yuck!

When I saw your heading? the first thing I thought of was Diamond rings...

I was Lord Of The Rings..Once..

I kept putting them on fingers..

They kept taking them off :)
