It's Warmer Now Time to Do Some Sober Fishing!

Now this is what I'm talking about....warm weather (finally), frying up some chicken, making homemade potato salad, deviled eggs and something sinfully sweet for dessert and taking the rubber boat I found which someone threw away and going to one of the lakes to catch the big ones....well, hopefully they will be big.  A few years ago when I was drinking, we would take beer in a cooler and drink them in areas where alcohol was prohibited. We were always looking behind our backs to check for Game Wardens or officials who could catch us and "ruin" our fishing for us. Ha! One place we went one of them  would hide behind some over grown brush. He always had a pair of binoculars aimed at the boats on the water. I guess he was trying to see if anyone was drinking. We stopped taking beer there because we didn't want "Barney" to catch us.

I caught a 21-1/2 pound catfish a few years back. Actually, my bf helped me because when it swam close enough to us for me to see it, I freaked out and insisted he take the pole. The fish swam under a log and the line got caught around it. I would have cut the line and given up. My bf was very patient and the fish eventually got loose from the log and after what seemed like the longest time of fighting it, my bf reeled it in. I was screaming and going ballistic because I was scared of this monster! I had to drink another beer really fast just to deal with it. It was almost four feet long and I had to hold it up while my bf insisted on taking pictures and holding up that big a fish while drunk was not an easy task for me.

My dad would have been proud of me catching that fish. He would take me out fishing many times--just the two of us--and the main thing I would catch would be either snags or tree limbs hanging above us. I learned alot of new swear words when that would happen and my dad used a lot of new hooks because he had to break most of those lines. One time a friend and I wanted to go fishing when my dad was at work. I wanted to try out his new fishing pole and reel he had ordered from JC Penny. When it arrived he just stared at it for the longest time.  I knew I shouldn't have borrowed it without his permission, however, I still did it. It had a special reel on it which I really wanted to try. I thought I was hot stuff with "my" new rod and reel! (I grew up in a very small town). My friend and I drove to a nearby lake and were enjoying ourselves until I got a snag. I kept jerking and jerking then I noticed that the top part of the rod came loose and was sliding down the line and towards the water. I was not a good swimmer and knew I couldn't save it and I sadly watched it sink in the water. My friend was a good swimmer and I got a huge resentment because she refused to swim out in the lake and get it. And I knew I was going to get it when I told my dad that part of his new fishing rod was laying somewhere in the bottom of the James River. My fear of having to face my dad and what his reaction would be caused me to come up with a way he may not find out what happened. My dad painted as a hobby. I got a tube of black paint from his supplies and painted the top part of an old rod he had. I stuck it into the bottom part of his new one and put it back where I got it. In my mind, I was off the "hook".  Well, I was only fooling myself. A day later I came home from being out with my friends and my dad told me the next time I wanted to use his rod without his permission and  replace it with another rod which I painted, I might want to use something which dries faster than oil paint. Apparently my dad either wanted to go fishing or moved it and when he picked it up he got black paint all over his hands. Surprisingly, he didn't seem to mad at me. I never borrowed any of his things without asking first after that happened.

Yes, I am really looking forward to fishing sober and maybe I will make some homemade lemonade to drink.

BTY

I think it sounds like a lot of fun too.  BTY, love the way you tell a story.  I could picture the whole thing in my mind.  Blessings, Mike D.

Yep, great story Grace, ... now, ... I want to go fishing ... but I still haven't replaced the 'rods 'n reels' my son 'borrowed' from me and did to me what you did to your dad, in a way ... LOL ... ... ... (hundreds of dollars worth of fishing stuff gone ... I was too much into drinking to even notice til all my stuff just disappeared ...)
